I use speed dating in my German 2 class to practice past participles. It’s kind of like walking flash cards. It works quite well, but one problem I run into is that students don’t necessarily “date” all of the possible past participles if they just move around the room randomly. Do you have this problem, or are your classes small enough that it isn’t an issue? Last time I tried a more organized setup where students formed two concentric circles and one circle rotated to find a new date. Just wondering if you have this issue too? When I do it, I tell them that they can’t date the same question they have already seen. Since they are switching cards, they can date the same person multiple times, but not the same question.

Students who will shut down understandably at a worksheet of 20 problems will happily get a comparable amount of practice working one problem at a time, particularly if they can work with a partner and check their answers as they go hurray for QR codes! I was just never sure how to make it work for ME.
I tried speed-math-ing with my Pre-Algebra kids first. My two collaborative, inclusion Pre-Algebra classes are small, so I set up two sets of 8 desks in the room. One reason I decided on two sets was to allow for a bit of differentiation; students in these classes work at vastly different speeds, and splitting them up would allow students to work at a pace comfortable for them. We are working on solving systems of equations and started out by solving via graphing. This way they truly understand what they are finding when solving a system. Not necessarily a hard task but it is something they need practice on solving. Basically the desks were lined up with two desks per pod. I had 12 groups. Look at them working so hard! Love them all! I made 12 sets of different equations and numbered each set. I then handed out a set to each group being mindful of the level of difficulty when I initially handed them out.
When they were done I checked their answers and helped clear up any mistakes. After students had become experts at their problem, I had the student sitting In the middle isle change desks behind them so they were sitting with a new person that had a different problem. They students then exchanged note cards and solved the new problem. Also I knew the correct answer was their as well.
Speed Dating Number Talks
Having this information prior to the event will allow the students to use their short time it is a speed event after all most effectively. Small touches will make a difference. Providing name tags for everyone, water for the panelists, extra paper and writing instruments for taking notes, and encouraging the professionals to pass out business cards will add to the experience for both parties.
It is important to pay attention to time during the activity. Each round has to be long enough for the students to gather some information and short enough to get to each panelist during the activity. A stopwatch and a whistle are essential equipment.

The previous day in class I had them each solve a different inequality in their INBs — I also used this as a concept check to see how they were doing on this. I checked each solution to make sure it was accurate and helped walk students through where they were stuck.
Today, after we all learned how speed dating works, I explained MATH speed dating: They would sit across from each other for approximately 5 minutes. There was some great conversation about strategies and I think a lot of them had mistakes pointed out to them that they normally missed! Many students also realized that there were certain types of inequalities they still need practice on and were able to describe those on their paper at the end of class. For the inequalities I gave each of them, I printed out a worksheet from their textbook and cut the problems apart, then gave each student one problem to glue in their INBs.

We will do our best to provide you increased on-campus teaching and research activities as we progress throughout the year. The event is open to 2nd – 4th year undergraduate students and MSc students. The hope is that the visiting industry representatives are former mathematics graduates and Imperial alumni, enabling students to gain a better understanding of possible career paths in mathematics and truly understand how mathematics is used in different organisations.

Skill and Drill Without the Worksheets
I had students actively engaged in evaluating exponential expressions not the most thrilling standard for over forty-five minutes! I was blown away! The activity itself makes students interact with different classmates but for a short enough time so that it never gets too awkward and they never have enough time to start goofing off.
Each time students switch partners, they work on a new math problem, so accountability is high to learn the skill. When the activity begins, students receive the same problem that their partners across from them receive.

I am going to ask students to pick up a card as they enter class. Students will become an expert on the problem that they choose, so I want students to be able to pick a problem that they feel is accessible. Them, students have 10 minutes to solve their problem and become an expert on how to explain the solution process to someone else. During this period, they can ask anyone for help.
After ten minutes they will need to be the expert on the problem. The answers are copied on the back of the card so that students can check their work. I may review with students for a moment to make sure they recall how to find the area and perimeter of a rectangle. I know I should expect students to know this by now. I want to make sure that there is no confusion. I want an accurate representation of which students can and cannot solve a rational equation when it is applied in context.
Technology Note : If students will be texting in their answers, they are not expected to text in units as it will not mark the answer correct. The assignment helps students to continue to build their skills in solving rational equations and has students review past concepts of compositions, identify zeros of a polynomial, and finding the inverse of a function.
